I have rolled my eyes more than 20 times so far. She bashes on every single TV show, book or movie she mentions in the book, where she also touches key plot points in many books and movies.

I think she should have added a disclaimer on each chapter telling us which book or movie she's going to spoil to death. Bad Feminist: Essays is a collection of essays by cultural critic, novelist and professor Roxane Gay. Bad Feminist explores being a feminist while loving things that could seem at odds with feminist ideology.

Everyone wants to a see a version of themselves in a movie, TV show, book, or commercial, even if only for a brief moment of recognition. It’s empowering and reinforces how you view yourself, especially in the context of society.

I have a limited appetite for arguments about the relative merits of reality television shows, though I can see how this may inform some. Opinionated bloggers, myself included, are sometimes best in small doses, when they can prick the conscience by criticizing (both good and bad) things they see, thus arming readers with support for their own. Gay analyzes her love of the Hunger Games series and how damaging the Fifty Shades series is to women.

I am just trying — trying to support what I believe in, trying to do some good in this world, trying to make some noise with my writing while also being myself: a woman who loves pink and likes to get freaky and sometimes dances her ass off to music she knows, she knows , is terrible for women and who sometimes plays dumb with repairmen because it's just easier to let them feel macho than it is to stand on the moral high ground.

An unusual book for you Ali. I have a huge pile! I'm raising my voice to show all the ways we have room to want more, to do better. The cult of celebrity, the expectations of female perfection, issues of gender and race and the depiction of the black experience by Hollywood screenwriters and directors all come in for criticism.

I get that we have to go to uncomfortable places to understand societal issues, but sometimes the negativity left me with no direction. I'm not trying to be an example. Thanks for pointing me towards it. I believe feminism is grounded in supporting the choices of women even if we wouldn't make certain choices for ourselves.

Sign me up. The essays in my collection also examine race in contemporary film, the limits of "diversity," and how innovation is rarely satisfying; it is rarely enough. It felt refreshing to hear a voice that was maybe more moderate than a lot of feminist and liberal voices today, but was still decidedly pro-black lives matter, pro-trans rights, and pro-lgbtq rights.

I am raising my voice as a bad feminist. The various essays have differing tones. I know feminism will not and cannot fix everything. Will do!
