Why does hgtv use so many gay couples


They do have same sex couples on some shows sometimes, and a gay host or cast member here and there. But design was a space that gay men so completely owned for so long, yet the last decade or so on HGTV has seen shows with an increasing number of evangelical couples hosting. Here are six HGTV hosts who are members of the LGBTQ community.

Whether you're familiar with their work or not, these HGTV stars are out and proud. Though HGTV currently has two LGBTQ+-led home renovation shows on the air — Bargain Block and The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project — they're drowned out by the overwhelming amount of programming featuring straight (and almost always white) duos released by the network and its parent streaming service, Discovery+.

After years of featuring only straight couples, HGTV took a step toward LGBTQIA+-friendly content when they hired husbands PJ and Thomas McKay for "Down to the Studs," which aired its pilot in. It's really weird, though, that HGTV caters to a few demographics that aren't very similar - a very fundie/churchy/Trumpy demographic, but also a very trendy demographic and for some shows a very gay demographic.

Or is it? There were a lot of TV programs on regular TV, then with cable, even more, so I have the same TV downstairs as I used to tape a lot of TV shows — so often there were two or three shows at p.
